Belonging

Before accepting Jesus into our lives we were searching for a place to belong. Like orphans, we were lost searching for a place of purpose, love, a place where we could truly be ourselves, and a place where we truly can say we belong. Before we could actually find that place, God had to find us in our loneliness, our sin and our separation. Mistakenly, we tried to find belonging in places that could never  give us what we needed. In order for us to truly find a place of belonging we must open our hearts to receive the revelation of who we belong to.

If we have received God's Spirit, we belong not to this world, but to the Father in heaven. He has called and chosen us to belong to Him. We have become His children and He has become our Father. We have been adopted into the family of believers and now we have brothers and sisters in Christ(read Romans 8:15). Since we belong to our Father, we have been called to love one another and to be in perfect unity with one another. In John 17:21, Jesus prayed that we would be one, as He and the Father are one. Think about this: God now lives in us; we know that God is love(read 1 John 4:8), and we know that nothing can separate us from the love of God (read Romans 8:31-39).

Now if that is the case, what can separate us from other believers? Can anything separate us from the love of God? Since we have been adopted in the family of believers what holds us back from giving the Love of God to each other? Does God's love belong only to us or does it belong to everyone?  Do we belong with each other in unity? Since we belong to God don’t we belong to one another as well?

Scripture to Meditate On

Acts 4:32  All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.”

Romans 12:5-6 “so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.”

1 Corinthians 12:25  “so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.”

Ephesians 4:2-6  “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism;  one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

Galatians 6:10 “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Challenge

Pray that you would find your belonging in Him and in the community of other believers. Write down what you want to contribute to community and ask the Holy Spirit to help you wherever you struggle to belong with Him and His people. Give Him permission to Strengthen you in the areas of weakness and the Holy Spirit will be your strength.
