Salt & light, two very important concepts Jesus used to describe how we are to bring transformation to world full of darkness and moral decay. We carry this ability inside of us that can literally bring change and comfort to any situation. It isn’t out our own ability but the Holy Spirit inside of us. Now, before we dive in, answer the following questions:

1. Have you ever been in a situation that was so full of darkness, seemed hopeless, too broken to fix, yet you carried a peace that others were able to see and feel?

2. At this very moment in your life, do you believe you carry transforming power inside of you?

3. How often do you take the authority you carry to cause change and release it to your family and friends?

Alright! Now that we’ve answered those questions lets break down the meaning of the following verses.

Matthew 5:13-16

“13 You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Salt of the earth: salt is a mineral on earth that is used to enhance and preserve and Jesus says the his followers are meant to do that. What good is it for us to have the ability to demonstrate the power and love of God in situations but refuse to, Jesus calls it a waste.

Light of the world: We were once in darkness until God came to the rescue. His light invades us and because of this we are now commissioned to release that same light to those stuck in the same darkness we once lived in. Jesus had no problem placing people in influential areas because He understood that when His followers are seen so is He.

Something we need to point at is the fact that Jesus didn’t say “you have the option to be salt or light” he specifically said “YOU ARE” meaning it isn’t optional. The reason it isn’t optional is because Jesus is always clear on what He speaks, in this moment he described a part of our responsibility. YOUR ARE to be an influence, YOU ARE to bring transformation to the broken and burdened, YOU ARE to release the power of healing over the sick, YOU ARE to show everyone who the Father is!

CHALLENGE TIME

Take time this week to pray and ask Holy Spirit to show you what areas in your life are not in accordance with what Jesus has called you to be, an influence, a safe haven, a person who shows others the truth. Write these barriers down and then ask Holy Spirit for a strategy on how to remove these barriers. Ask Him questions like “What steps can I take to live in the calling you have given me? What do I surrender?” But that’t not where it ends. Once He has answered, you have to be obedient!
